Multi-award-winning Taipei-based company KYDO offers its client exceptional design inspiration and a unique vision for modern living. Established in 2011, the boutique design studio is led by its founder and director, Liao KengYu. His team of specialists works closely with their clients to create elegant, artistic spaces with maximum functionality that integrate art and craftsmanship, using modern materials and advanced design techniques.
KengYu lends his considerable skills and knowledge accumulated through his work in the industry over many years to widely diverse projects, from low-key private homes to stylish restaurants and hotels and luxurious palatial spaces. He believes every space should tell its own story. To achieve this, he focuses on creating tailor-made designs and exclusive furniture and lighting solutions, offering artistic flair and practicality.
Dikeyuwo perfectly illustrates this commitment to transforming spaces. Located at the heart of vibrant Taipei in Taiwan, the building used to be home to Dick’s place, the legendary bar owned by Dick Chen, Taiwan’s first mixologist to head up the bar at an international hotel chain. It reopened in 2021, having undergone a total redesign, as Dikeyuwo with a collection of entertaining spaces fulfilling six different functions. Spread over two floors, customers can spend time in the snack bar, cafe, bar, restaurant, or tea room, and there’s even a private venue for hire.
While remaining mindful of the bar’s heritage, KYDO also saw the chance to redesign the space as a new chapter in the city’s cafe culture scene. The designers also wanted the whole building to reflect the philosophy of Taiwan’s generous hospitality. Each area functions individually while also flowing together harmoniously with the clever use of different materials, lighting, color palettes, and furniture bringing everything together.
Even from the outside, Dikeyuwo presents an intriguing picture, tempting passersby with its open garage-style windows and tasty takeaway menu. Different corners have been cleverly established to fulfill different needs throughout the building. The sleek open coffee bar welcomes guests with its soulful palette of black, white, and grey and the signature speckled wall with its unvarnished textures. The bar area is inspired by traditional lacquer with wood-grained walls inspiring an environment of warmth and comfort. Palettes of sienna, wood, and brown are teamed with curated vintage pieces for a touch of history. The bar is a clever sunken design, putting the bartender at eye-level with the seated guests, which removes all sense of hierarchy and puts guests at ease.
The spare treatment of the walls and ceiling, charcoal bench and custom bar chairs, and graceful curves of the pure white staircase brings an immediate sense of calm to everyone who enters. The graceful sweep of the stairs leads up to the second level and the cocoon of the private rooms with their minimalist yet warm contemporary design and vintage Western furniture. The peaceful Zen-like tearoom with its rough-hewn mineral-painted earthen walls brings a sense of style and texture. Even the staff door has been transformed into a focal point with door panels painted like an abstract painting and capped by a copper frame adding a sense of the theatre to the space.
The imaginative designers at KYDO have created an inviting and diverse experience letting the textures and materials used throughout do the talking. All resulting in a luxury oasis that provides a thoughtfully-designed, practical, and multi-purpose luxurious space – the ideal haven for relaxation and recreation in the heart of the city’s hustle and bustle.
For the work exhibited by the execution of this unique project, the panel of specialist judges at Luxury Lifestyle Awards has chosen KYDO as the winner of a prestigious award in the category of Best Luxury Restaurant Interior Design 2022 for Dikeyuwo in Taiwan. This a well-deserved accolade for the forward-thinking company making its mark in the Taiwanese marketplace. This is the second year they have been recognized with such a prestigious award from the Luxury Lifestyle Awards.
